What is Malocclusion?

Malocclusion is an irregular bite characterized by misshapen jawbones and crooked or protruding teeth. Signs and symptoms of malocclusion include:

• Difficulty chewing (due to pain)
• Repeated biting of the mouth or cheek
• Difficulty speaking
• Facial or jaw pain

Heredity is the primary cause of malocclusion. As the teeth and jaw grow, they can become disproportionate to one another, leaving the teeth either too much or not enough room. Teeth may emerge from the gums in the wrong place or the jaw can become deformed.

Malocclusion can also be caused by poor oral habits and early tooth loss. Examples of causative habits include sucking on a pacifier or thumb too much and breathing through the mouth. Tooth loss – typically caused by trauma or decay – can leave room for the teeth to shift.

Only in rare cases is malocclusion of medical concern; speech impediments or problems eating are examples. Most patients who seek orthodontic treatment for malocclusion are motivated by aesthetic improvement.
